These are pure advertisements, with a dash of history. Typically free, they often list hotels (but with no real information other than address phone, and class).
Mostly they are a series of advertisements for stores, restaurants, hotels and the like. This can be entertaining, and provides a nice souvenir, but there little non-commercial information here.
The Greek agency for promoting tourism, the GNTO, offers a bunch of little pamphlets on various areas of the country. These contain some brief descriptions of islands or cities, a list of hotels, some phone numbers and some photos. Nothing special, but free. I assume the internet is likely putting an end to this. At the minimum you can download some of them from the GNTO web site.
