galaxidiAncient site of Dion
An important site for Macedonian history that also shows the role of eastern gods upon Greece.

The site of Dion is between Mt. Olympus and the shore. The peaks of Olympus are visible to the west.

Visit AncientDion (up 3/11/16) for good panoramas and models.

Sanctuary of Demeter. Dion is a complex of many sanctuaries. It was a main religious site for ancient Macedonia. Philip and Alexander celebrated victories here.

Sanctuary of Demeter (panning to the right of previous photo). There are many more sanctuaries than I have photographed here including a stadium, a theater and houses. This was a large complex.

Sanctuary of Zeus Hypsistos ("Zeus Highest")

Sanctuary of the Egyptian goddess Isis. Built in the 2nd century CE it was found only in 1978. That a "foreign" god was honored with a sanctuary is quite interesting.

Statue of Aphrodite Hypolimpidia ("under Olympus") at the sanctuary of Isis.

Statue at the sanctuary of Isis. The combination of ruins and the river is compelling. It is speculated that the long narrow waterway is to represent the Nile.

Mosaic floor in the Dionysus Villa.

Statuettes of Harpokrates found in the sanctuary of Isis. Now in the museum.
