In the line of windmills on a ridge in Chora is one with a sign reading "library".

The woman who keeps the city library has built a multi-lingual lending library that is open on selected evenings.

She doesn't like putting herself forward to be photographed but this is a remarkable achievement. She loans books out to anyone - she set me up with some Greek poetry and told me I could return the books to the hotel if I didn't catch her before I left. Apparently all this is her doing. All of us who love books and the worlds they open to us should think of her as one of our heros .
